New York State Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul on Friday defended her decision to deploy the National Guard to New York City's subways, citing “anxiety” among commuters, the New York Post reported.
Hochul announced Wednesday that he would send 750 New York National Guard troops and 250 state troopers to fight crime on New York City's subways. Hochul defended the decision after criticism from law enforcement officials and lawmakers.
“When you have this much anxiety, you're facing such a psychological burden that people don't want to ride the subway,” Hochul said, according to the newspaper.

“New Yorkers want the truth and solutions! Let's talk.” NYPD Sergeant John Chell posted Thursday on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Our transportation system is not a 'war' zone. there is no!”
New York City police arrested three suspects on February 23 in connection with the death of a 45-year-old commuter, six days after his severed leg was found on the subway tracks. Police also took into custody a Brooklyn man with eight previous arrests on February 16 after the cellist was attacked.
In May 2023, Marine Corps veteran Daniel Penny turned himself in after being charged with second-degree manslaughter in the death of Jordan Neely. Mr Neely, 30, died while being restrained by Mr Penny after behaving erratically on the subway and assaulting other passengers.
