We want to talk about the County Board of Supervisors race in Arizona and why it's so important to our community and, frankly, to the country.
Fact 1: County Boards of Supervisors oversee election administration throughout Arizona.
County boards of supervisors serve four-year terms and oversee the administration of a variety of public services, including health care, roads, water and sewerage, and elections. The BOS has the power to delete and replace electoral districts, appoint election inspectors, examine results, and certify elections. These positions are important safeguards to protect voter rights across the state, and electing the wrong candidate can have a devastating impact on voter access.
Republican candidate Robert “Scott” Waddle is challenging Supervisor Donav Whitesinger, who represents District 5. Losing this seat would mean a return to precinct-only voting and potential redistricting, both of which would disenfranchise Native voters in vast Navajo County. Re-electing Whitesinger, the first White Mountain Apache to serve on the Board of Supervisors, will ensure that Native American interests are protected.
Fact 3: Down-ballot elections like BOS can have a big impact on the top of the poll.
If there's one fact that our elections have proven time and time again, it's that there is no such thing as a decline in the yes vote, but there is such a thing as a decline in the vote against. What this means is that organizing for a strong candidate, like a gubernatorial candidate or a presidential candidate, actually only helps that candidate. But organizing candidates for the Board of Supervisors helps rally voters to their campaigns and all the top candidates on the ticket.
Fact 4: NEAZ has the most successful organizing program in the state because of its focus on oversight committees.
It is no surprise that voters are disillusioned with national politics and are choosing to stay home. We can avoid this and ensure that local voting rights are protected by focusing on local positions such as supervisory boards. The path to the White House, a Democratic Congress, and a Democratic Congress runs through sovereign land and our programs are proven to work. Please help us continue this important work.
