2nd Congressional District ‘winnable’ says Alabama GOP chairman

Alabama Republican Party Chairman John Wall is cautiously optimistic that Republicans can win in the Yellow Hammer State's newly redistricted 2nd Congressional District.

Republican candidate for AL-2, Carolyn Dobson, will face off against Democrat Shomali Figures in November. A newly released poll shows that when voters know Dobson and Figures' backgrounds and where they stand on issues, Dobson leads 48% to 43%.

Wall discussed the election on WVNN's “Yaffie Program” earlier this week.

“I'm very optimistic, but I want to see the reality,” Wall said. “I think we have to remember that this district was designed by a federal court as a Democratic district, and that's very unfortunate.”

Wall said Democrats are underestimating how many African-American voters will switch parties and vote Republican.

“They assumed all black voters were Democrats,” Wall argues. “When they redistricted the district to create a Democratic district, they didn't realize that about 10 to 15 percent of the black population in the 2nd District is currently polling to say they will vote Republican, and that number is growing. Just recently, we did a statewide poll, and 18 percent of African-Americans said they plan to vote for Donald Trump. That's an astounding number. That's double what we've seen historically. And more importantly, when we asked whether the court finding Donald Trump guilty made them more or less likely to vote for Trump, 36 percent of black voters said the ruling made them more likely to vote for Trump. Wow.”

Wall said minority voters have begun to part ways with Democrats on economic and cultural issues.

“We all know the economy is bad,” he said. “It's what you see every day at the grocery store, right? I think the hidden issue that nobody talks about that's really driving change within the Black community is actually the woke policies of the Democratic Party. When I ask African-American voters, 'What is the most important issue to you?' I'll have them run through their list with things like state lottery, tax cuts, fiscal responsibility, the economy, job creation, protecting our kids from what policies, and within the margin of error, the thing that they care most about is … protecting our kids from woke policies.”

“I don't think they're excited,” he added. “They're not happy with what the national Democrats are forcing on the state, and they're not happy with the actual explicit materials in the libraries and the indoctrination in the schools, which is radical LGBTQ indoctrination. A lot of their communities are organized around churches and families. And I think that these issues are impacting Black voters the hardest, especially in rural Alabama, and in fact Democrats are doing their best to woo them right now.”

Wall added that for too long, Democrats have neglected African-American voters.

“I think they know the Democrats are using them,” he said. “They don't actually care about what's best for their community. They're just using them as political votes, and they don't actually care when it comes to policy and making their lives better. And if this trend continues, I think we'll win the 2nd District. Maybe not this election cycle, maybe in the future, but this district will be a winnable district, and we're going to do our best now and through 2024 to fight for this district and win.”
