Hugh Culverhouse Jr., a Sarasota developer and major donor to the University of Alabama, donated $500,000 to the Trump campaign following his “politically motivated” trial that led to his recent guilty verdict in New York.
Culverhouse, a former lawyer, is not a supporter of Trump or his Democratic opponent, President-elect Joe Biden, but he says the U.S. justice system should not be used to influence the outcome of an election or the political process as a whole.
“It doesn't matter if Trump is a Republican or Democrat, the justice system should not be used as a political tool. Democrats crossed a line with this persecution and would say the same thing if Republicans treated President Biden this way,” Culverhouse wrote.
Culverhouse also said he believes it is foolish for Democrats to try to undermine President Trump through legal and financial means.

“I think this was the stupidest moment for the Democratic Party,” he said. “If Joe Biden wants to run against Trump, One-on-one“And drop it, throw it away, and be a man, because you're going to wear him down financially and physically.”
Culverhouse was also a major donor and supporter of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis' presidential campaign, giving at least $740,000 to DeSantis' organizations.
