Huntsville leading Alabama large cities in growth per year according to Census data

The Rocket City continues to be by far the fastest growing large city in the state, according to new estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau.

In fact, of the state's four largest cities (Birmingham, Huntsville, Montgomery and Mobile), Huntsville is the only one that's growing consistently, adding about 10 people per day last year (3,534 this year).

One year later, Huntsville's total population is 225,564.

Birmingham lost 246 residents over the course of the year, bringing its population to 196,644.

Meanwhile, Montgomery saw an influx of 1,650 people, nearly seven times the number of people in Birmingham, bringing its population to 195,287.

From 2022 to 2023, Mobile's population decreased by 695 people, but increased by about 20,000 people due to annexations, making it the second most populous city with a population of about 205,000.

The state's fifth-largest city, Tuscaloosa, is also seeing population growth. Home to the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa's population grew by 760 people to more than 111,000, according to the census. Statewide, Auburn grew by nearly 2,000 people to 82,000, ranking seventh in the state.
