If you're looking to fish for free in Alabama, the state's Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) has some exciting news to share.
The department recently announced that June 8 has been designated this year's Alabama Free Fishing Day. During the day, most public waters, both freshwater and saltwater, will be open to anglers of all skill levels and ages.
“Free Fishing Day is a great opportunity for people who have never fished before to give it a try,” said ADCNR Commissioner Chris Blankenship. “Fishing not only provides many mental and physical health benefits, it also provides access to a sustainable and healthy source of protein.”
“It's also a great way for families to spend time together outdoors, and we encourage anyone interested in fishing to take advantage of this outdoor recreational opportunity.”
Free Fishing Days take place during Alabama's red snapper season. Fishing license requirements are waived on Free Fishing Days, but a $10 Gulf of Mexico Fish Endorsement is required to fish for red snapper.
Public fishing lakes in Alabama require a fishing license even on free fishing days, and fishing on private ponds requires permission from the pond owner. Some piers may also require a fee and a permit.
