Bowman was embroiled in a scandal after he pulled a fire alarm in the Cannon House Office Building during a House vote on the Republican spending package on Sept. 30, 2023. Security camera footage showed Bowman ripping a sign off a door and setting off the fire alarm without trying to open the door.
Bowman initially denied setting off the alarm intentionally, claiming he did so by mistake because he thought it would open a locked door.

“Today, I was rushing to vote and came across a door that's normally open for voting, but today it wasn't open,” Bowman said. statement Sept. 30. “I am embarrassed to admit that I mistakenly thought that pulling the fire alarm would open the doors. Bowman pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges after the incident. He was later censured by the House of Representatives, including Democratic Reps.
