Nature Conservancy to dedicate new 1,000-acre preserve at Flagg Mountain

The Nature Conservancy of Alabama will host an Earth Day dedication ceremony for the new Fennvukvchekvu (pronounced finoo-g-zeeg) Creek Preserve on Flagg Mountain in Coosa County on Friday, April 19, at 10 a.m.

Flag Mountain is the southernmost peak and beginning of the 2,000-mile-long Appalachian Mountains, which is why The Nature Conservancy calls it one of the most important protected areas on the planet. The organization purchased two parcels of land adjacent to Flag Mountain to create a 1,000-acre nature preserve.

The name originally came from the Muscogee people, who were the first custodians of the land, and is also the name of the original Muscogee people of the adjacent Finikochika River.

“Establishing a brand new sanctuary in our state is as special as the land and the people and traditions it namesake honors,” said TNC Alabama State Director Mitch Reed. “We can't think of a more appropriate day than Earth Day to dedicate this area and demonstrate our commitment to protecting it for future generations.”

“This area in particular has long been a conservation priority. Thanks to the efforts of The Nature Conservancy, The Conservation Fund and other partners, conservation efforts around Flag Mountain continue to expand, and we are honored to have the opportunity to protect these lands and waters in perpetuity,” Reed said.

We are especially grateful to The Nature Conservancy for donating the 315 acres of land that will be included in the preserve.”

TNCs are A global conservation organization dedicated to protecting the lands and waters on which all life depends. “We are expanding our efforts to protect Flag Mountain, and this latest step is the latest in a long series of efforts to protect an area deemed critically important.”
