Nick Saban’s advisor salary revealed

Nick Saban, who shocked the college football world six months ago with the news of his retirement, has become accustomed to being in the national spotlight since his retirement, having been spotted testifying on Capitol Hill, relaxing at the Masters, commentating on the NFL Draft and everywhere in between.

However, the former coach remains heavily involved with his former program and continues to serve as an official adviser to the University of Alabama athletic department.

“He's great. We talked to him during our coaching search,” Alabama athletic director Greg Byrne said in February.

“Someone asked me, 'Was he involved?' and I was like, man, I'm not very smart. A lot of people know that. But I'm smart enough to know that when I have an opportunity to talk to Nick Saban about coaching and football and decision-making and leadership, it would be embarrassing not to take advantage of it.”

Financial details of Saban's advisory position were released Thursday morning. AL.comThe former Tide coach has been making $41,666 per week since the beginning of March, which equates to a $500,000 annual salary.

Saban's salary as an adviser is higher than his previous base salary. Under the terms of his last contract as the Tide's head coach, Saban's salary was just $305,000, excluding bonuses and retention pay. A clause called a “talent fee” made up the bulk of Saban's income, making him the highest-paid coach in college football at more than $11 million per year.
