Rep. Robert Aderholt (R-Haleyville) is scrutinizing federal agencies in Washington, D.C., for allowing too many employees to work from home rather than come into the office.

“While Americans report to work in person every day, federal employees are constantly abusing work-from-home policies within their own agencies,” Aderholt told Yellow Hammer News on Thursday. “Agencies that provide direct services to the public, like the Social Security Administration, are the biggest perpetrators of this abuse. Some of these employees are paid in the Washington, DC area but live in other states.”

Aderholt, who chairs the House Appropriations Committee's Labor, Health, Human Services and Education Subcommittee, believes the measure is necessary because it's past time for these employees to “return to work.”

“Federal agencies that provide direct services to the public must get back to work to better serve the American people,” he said. “Telework should not be a blanket policy, but should be determined on a case-by-case basis.”

The directive will be part of a committee report accompanying the Labor, Health and Human Services and Education appropriations bill.

“The American people need a federal workforce that reflects the realities of coming to work every day,” Aderholt added. “That's why we must end the overuse of telework across the federal government, and I urge the heads of these agencies to immediately return federal employees to work so the American people can receive the services they deserve. Simply put, it's time to get back to work. The rest of the country is already back to work, and now is the time for federal employees to do the same.”

The order also lists the number of employees in the Departments of Education and Health and Human Services who receive a local salary in the Washington area but do not frequently work from an office.
