Prescott, AZ (AZFamily) The Yavapai County Sheriff's Office said authorities shot and killed an armed suspect while attempting to arrest a suspected drug dealer in Prescott Valley on Wednesday.
At approximately 3 p.m., detectives were executing an arrest warrant on a suspected drug trafficker. Prescott East Highway The incident happened in the Castle Canyon Mesa area of ​​Prescott Valley, about 20 minutes east of Prescott. The suspect has been identified as 45-year-old Aaron Richard Neilson.
As authorities were attempting to execute the warrant, Nielson refused to appear and pulled out a weapon. Investigators say Nielson “posed a threat to the lives” of officers on the scene, so a YCSO detective and a Prescott police officer shot and killed Nielson to “disrupt the threat.”
Paramedics attempted to save Neilson but he died at the scene.
No officers or deputies were injured.
The Arizona Department of Public Safety's Special Investigations Unit will begin investigating the incident.
This marks the 14th officer-involved shooting outside the Valley and the 42nd statewide in 2024.
