The Schultz Creek Drainage Improvement Project on US HWY 180 is experiencing delays due to an unexpected development in the relocation of an existing utility line.

The project is expected to be largely completed by the last week of July, with road paving and landscaping to begin by mid-August.

Existing storm water infrastructure on U.S. Highway 180 will remain in place and will not be removed until the drainage improvement project is completed.

In 2023, flood risk in the area has been significantly reduced by installing a retention pond upstream and adding a new 48-inch storm sewer near Fire Station No. 5. The current project will continue flood mitigation efforts by increasing the culvert's capacity to accommodate a 100-year storm event.

Residents in the Coconino Estates area are encouraged to hold onto their sandbags until a project on U.S. Hwy 180 is completed.

Due to the delays, the volunteer sandbag removal event scheduled for July 20 has been postponed. The sandbag removal event on July 27 will go ahead as scheduled. Volunteers can apply below. bit.ly/2024sandbagvolunteers.

Sandbags can still be picked up at Thorpe Park (500 N Aztec St., in the parking lot between Francis Short Pond and the softball field), this area is clearly marked with signs.
