Hiker discovers partially assembled pipe bomb in rural Arizona

PHOENIX – A man hiking with his children in rural Arizona last week discovered something potentially explosive: a partially assembled pipe bomb.

A hiker found the ammunition box on Friday in a rock pile near Hillside in Yavapai County, about 40 miles north of Wickenburg. The authorities.

When the man looked inside the can he found it filled with materials to make an improvised explosive device (IED), before resealing it and calling police.

Yavapai County Sheriff's Office deputies arrived on scene and found a 2-inch galvanized pipe bomb with a horseshoe-shaped nail and detonation cord inside. YCSO called in the Arizona Department of Public Safety Bomb Squad to investigate the situation.

Could a partially assembled pipe bomb have been detonated?

DPS determined the device did not contain any explosives, but found a baggie of black powder nearby, along with other IED components placed in a ziplock bag.

The bomb squad destroyed the black powder and detonation cord with a controlled explosion, neutralizing the potential threat.

Bomb-sniffing dogs were deployed, but no other explosives were found.

The investigation into the partially assembled pipe bomb is ongoing.
