Cancer survivors and caregivers celebrated at Yuma County’s Survivor Gala

Carnival for a Cure continues to raise funds for the American Cancer Society

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) – The Relay for Life Gala for Yuma County Survivors will be held at the historic venue church on Sunday, June 2nd, from 4pm.

Amber Thornton with Yuma County Relay for Life said 2014 was the first year they held a cancer survivor dinner, but this is the first year they're having a celebration.

“It's an elevated experience for our caregivers and sponsors, so it's both a year-round thank you to our sponsors and a celebration of survivors and their journey and the mission of the American Cancer Society,” Thornton explains.

The event is sold out but you can still attend. Silent Auction You can browse, bid and purchase items and packages through June 9th.

Thornton said the event was emotional.

“It's inspiring to hear the different stories of people affected by cancer. We had some great speakers last year and are looking forward to this year,” Thornton said. “I think each year the event brings something different to the table, depending on the goals of those attending and what their circumstances are throughout the year.”

Chef Jonathan Palacios of A Cut Above Meals will be in charge of dinner that evening.

“The main course will be roasted airline chicken served with roasted broccolini and truffle mashed potatoes in a honey garlic Dijon sauce,” Palacios says.

Thornton said he hopes to raise more money than last year.

“So every year we set a fundraising goal for Relay for Life. Last year we raised $91,000 for the American Cancer Society. This year our goal is to make it $150,000,” Thornton said. “So our goal is to get it done.”

The celebration is an opportunity for cancer survivors and their loved ones to come together and commemorate their journey.
