DreamWorks Animation announced on Tuesday that the fifth installment of its hit film series “Shrek” will hit theaters on July 1, 2026.

The Shrek series is a fantasy comedy about the adventures of Shrek the Ogre and his friends, including Donkey the Talking Donkey. The series is loosely based on William Steig's 1990 children's book Shrek!, about a lonely ogre who becomes embroiled in a battle for the fate of the world. according to To TV Tropes.
As reported by Collider, Murphy revealed in June that DreamWorks had begun recording voice material for the film.
“Shrek 4 and [Shrek] “We did it five months ago,” Murphy told the outlet. “We did it. We taped the first act. We're doing it this year, we're finishing it up,” he added. Murphy also revealed that a spinoff movie about his character Donkey is in the works, according to the outlet.
DreamWorks' decision to release a fifth film in the series ends a hiatus for the franchise; the previous four were released between 2001 and 2010. reportAccording to Variety, the Shrek franchise has also spawned a spinoff series starring Shrek's sidekick, Puss in Boots.
Variety magazine reports that Puss in Boots voice actor Antonio Banderas has not yet been confirmed to reprise his role in the new film.
