News Flash • Stage 1 Fire Restrictions to Begin Thursday in

Due to the potential for warm, dry, and windy conditions across Northern Arizona over the next few days, Coconino National Forest will begin implementing Stage 1 fire restrictions beginning at 8:00 AM on Thursday, June 6, 2024.

Pursuant to Coconino County Ordinance 2024-01, the Coconino County Office of Emergency Management (CCEM) will be enforcing Stage 1 fire restrictions simultaneously in all unincorporated areas of the county.

Under the County's Stage 1 regulations, the lighting, starting or maintaining of any fire fueled by combustible materials, including wood, charcoal, briquettes and coal, is strictly prohibited except within developed recreation sites. Smoking is also prohibited in any enclosed vehicle, building or except within developed recreation sites. The use of tracer or incendiary rounds or explosive targets is also strictly prohibited. Fireworks are prohibited at all times on National Forests and State lands.

Use of equipment that can be turned on and off and runs solely on pressurized liquefied petroleum gas or LPG fuel is permitted only on maintained recreation sites, which are defined in the County Wildfire Prevention Ordinance as areas within 15 feet of the equipment that have been cleared of all flammable material above and around the equipment or are barren.

Fire restrictions are implemented to prevent human-caused fires and to limit risk to visitors during periods of potentially dangerous fire conditions. Decisions regarding fire restrictions are based on a carefully measured combination of factors. Criteria used to determine when to implement restrictions include current and forecasted weather, fuel moisture, fire activity levels, prolonged drought, and available firefighting resources.

Additional restrictions may be imposed depending on conditions. Fire restrictions generally remain in effect until widespread heavy rainfall has occurred in the area.

Regardless of restrictions, you must always exercise caution when engaging in recreational activities on public lands, as violations may result in fines and/or imprisonment.
