John Deere Drops Sweeping Policy Updates That’ll Have Conservative Customers Cheering

Agriculture giant John Deere released a statement on Tuesday updating all of its diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) policies, then seemingly putting them behind it.

The statement tells customers that “your trust and confidence in us is of the utmost importance to everyone at John Deere.” post Attached to a screenshot shared on social media is a longer statement from the company announcing that it has revised its policies to “best serve” its “customers and employees.”

Going forward, John Deere has pledged to “focus exclusively on sponsorships that support our business and brands,” and will focus its non-profit sponsorships on what it considers to be priority areas, such as “hunger, economic development and poverty alleviation,” science, supporting military and veterans, and, of course, agricultural education.

“The company will no longer participate in or support outside social or cultural awareness parades, festivals or events,” the statement continued. John Deere's Business Resource Group will now be “focused on supporting professional development, networking, mentoring and recruiting activities.” (Related article: Food security isn't being tracked, scientists say. Am I the only one who thinks this basically means John Deere is done with identity crap and is going to focus on being a great company? This news will probably have you chanting “USA! USA!”, but don't forget that the company also announced it will be moving production overseas while also cutting about 610 jobs. So how pro-American are these people really now?

John Deere decision makers likely want to sound like they're very pro-America. They've also removed all “socially motivated” messaging from their training materials and policies. They also reaffirmed that John Deere has never implemented and will never implement “diversity quotas or pronoun identification.” (Related: Farmers issue dire warning across the U.S.)

“We fundamentally believe that a diverse workforce best serves the needs of our customers, and therefore we will continually track and promote diversity in our organization,” the commitment statement concludes.
