Native tribes in Yuma and La Paz counties get federal funding for housing and historic preservation

Native American communities in Yuma and La Paz counties in Arizona will receive federal funding to preserve their homes and historic buildings.

U.S. Congressman Raul Grijalva announced today that the Cocopah Tribe of Summerton and the Quechan Tribe of Yuma will receive a share of $1.1 billion from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for the Indian Housing Block Grant Program.

Rep. Grijalva said more than $36 million will be provided to tribes over seven years.Number A district in Arizona that includes the Tohono O'odham Nation and the Pascua Yaqui Tribe.

The Cocopah Tribe will receive $1,197,976 and the Quechan Tribe will receive $2,525,141.

Grijalva said the $1.1 billion in funding represents a 40 percent increase from last year and the largest ever investment in housing in Native communities. The money can be used for affordable housing activities, including building new homes, renovations and housing services.

“The Biden Administration's federal investment in Native American housing programs will give chronically underresourced tribal communities the ability to build safer, quality, affordable housing,” Grijalva said in a statement.

U.S. Sen. Mark Kelly announced Tuesday that the Colorado River Indian Tribe of Parker has been selected as one of 10 Native American communities in Arizona to receive funding for historic preservation.

Sen. Kerry said CRIT will receive $119,326 as part of the Historic Preservation Fund, which is administered by the National Park Service and supports programs and projects that “preserve Arizona's cultural resources and history.”

The 10 tribal nations across Arizona will receive a total of $1,326,297, and the state will receive $1,229,174.

“This investment not only honors our past, but also ensures that future generations can continue to learn from and cherish Arizona's diverse traditions and history,” Governor Kelly said in a statement.
