Widespread Panic announced on Monday that guitarist Jimmy Herring has been diagnosed with cancer and canceled upcoming concert dates.
The popular rock band made the shocking announcement on social media.
“The Widespread Panic family is saddened to announce that our brother, Jimmy Herring, has been diagnosed with Stage 1 tonsil cancer,” they said in a statement on Instagram. “He will begin treatment immediately and is expected to make a full recovery, which we are happy to report.”
They also informed fans of their cancellation and refund policies for upcoming shows.
“The band will not be performing at upcoming Asheville shows. We will provide more clarity in the coming days regarding future concert schedules,” the band wrote, as they try to work through the impact on the band as a whole.
“We appreciate everyone's concern and well wishes as Jimmy and his family navigate their recovery process.”
“The healing will begin,” they concluded, telling fans, “Refunds will be issued automatically at the point of purchase. Ticket holders do not need to take any other action.”

Herring was a top-notch guitarist who played in other bands including Frogwings, Jazz Is Dead and the Other Ones, a band made up of former members of the Grateful Dead, his biography said.
