Democratic strategist James Carville declared Wednesday that Vice President Kamala Harris' “best days” in the presidential race are behind us.
Biden abruptly dropped out of the presidential race on Sunday to endorse Harris, who is running on Democratic Party lines with little support from primary voters after garnering enough support from Democratic delegates to become the party's presumptive nominee. Carville, on “The Don Lemon Show,” said Harris' campaign started “very well” because voters “wanted something different” and Republicans were not prepared for Harris because they were focused on Biden. “Right now, she's doing well. She's doing very well. But let's look at why she's doing well. She's doing well because 72 percent of the public wanted something different, and she's something different,” Carville said. “So people are excited. I think we had 800,000 donations overnight, 60 percent of which were first-time donors. People weren't expressing a policy agenda, they just wanted something other than Donald Trump and Joe Biden. Thank God President Biden was strong enough to understand that, and the party quickly rallied behind the vice president. I'm very, very happy about that.”
Harris raised more than $81 million in the 24 hours after Biden announced he was dropping out of the race. CNN senior data reporter Harry Enten warned on Tuesday that it would be “tough” for Harris to beat Trump because her approval ratings rose after the Republican National Convention and she survived an assassination attempt.
“But I'm telling you, this is her best day for the rest of the campaign. They're coming in… they've been terrible, they've been a mess, and now they're cleaning up the mess,” Carville added. “Democrats have to be prepared. I hope she runs a good campaign, a good operation. It's hard… you don't just walk into this stuff, flip a switch and it works. They've got a lot of decisions to make, and they're coming fast, and they're launching brutal attacks. And some of those attacks are ridiculous, and some of them are going to require political skill, tact and some good answers. We have to be prepared for that.”
