There’s A Lesson To Learn From The Turkish ‘Hitman’ Who Raw-Dogged His Way To Silver

Turkey sent a possible hitman to the 2024 Summer Olympics, where a pistol shooter won a silver medal without any fancy gear.

Social media users have likened Yusuf Dikek to a ruthless hitman straight out of a Netflix spy thriller. It's hard not to disagree. He could very well be a real assassin, killing targets for the government. Chic glasses, blank expression, greying hair, hands nonchalantly in his pockets. No new lenses to reduce blur and improve accuracy, no earplugs to protect against noise. He's a Chad pro. And… South Korean Matrix Olympians Dickek (who is pretty awesome in her own right) did it with raw energy. (Click here to sign up for Mr. Right's weekly newsletter)

There's a deeper lesson in Dikec's success on the Olympic shooting range and in Bulgaria's rainy shipyards: In a world that's constantly trying to optimize everything from exercise to dating, living a raw dog life, untethered by modern technology, can feel deeply relieving. Burdened by what can be done and what has happenedYes, the old fashioned way is the best way, even if it seems like an obstacle.

That means I always play better when I play hard on the course. No golf spikes, just black high-top Vans. No golf gloves, just calloused hands. No country music or the Rolling Stones, just the sound of the breeze and the thumping of my long irons. Sure, I throw myself on the upper deck on my turns and chug a cold beer, but I don't use laser rangefinders to gauge the exact distance to the pin or over-analyze wind speeds.

This isn't just about sports – life in general is better when you show up as your authentic self. Life is better when you enjoy a beautiful sunset in the moment, instead of pulling out your phone to take a picture to put on your Instagram story. When talking to girls, you're better off just approaching them as a complete stranger, without practicing your pick-up lines. Writing is more fun when you just write as you please, without creating an outline.

As summer draws to a close, having a raw dog like a Turkish hitman will make it more fun and make you feel more human.
