CNN guest Tia Mitchell warned Monday afternoon that the energy behind Vice President Kamala Harris' presidential bid could “run out” if the campaign doesn't soon release a solid policy platform that addresses Harris' policy proposals.
Appearing on CNN News Central, Mitchell discussed Harris' possible campaign pledges, highlighting her high approval ratings among voters who support the economy despite President Joe Biden's low approval ratings. While explaining that Harris benefits from not being held accountable for the economy under the Biden administration, Mitchell warned that “enthusiasm” for the Democrats' “hopeful and positive” campaign message could quickly fizzle if she doesn't announce firm policy positions. “She told reporters today that some of her policy pieces will be announced soon, and that will include an economic package. So far, I think she's been able to juggle both. So she's benefited in that she can say, 'I'm aligned with President Biden. We've done great things. We've worked hard for three and a half years,' but the thing that's foremost in people's minds is rising prices, and she's not necessarily being blamed in the same way that President Biden is for the economy being in a precarious position,” Mitchell said.
Mitchell continued that voters want to hear which aspects of Biden's economic policies he will continue if re-elected, before noting that Harris agrees with former President Donald Trump on not taxing tips. Trump over the weekend blasted Harris as a “copycat” for supporting not taxing tips, a pledge Trump previously made to impose on service workers if re-elected.
“That being said, I think people are eager to hear what parts of Biden's economic policy she will continue and where she will pivot. You said she somewhat mirrors former President Trump's thinking in not wanting to tax tips. That's notable. You know, that's a real policy strategy that she can argue for and explain the reasoning behind and we would love to hear more,” Mitchell continued. “She talks about the Federal Reserve and contrasts herself with former President Trump and says the Federal Reserve should remain independent. That's just a little bit, but she says there's a lot more to come.”

“Certainly people will take note of that, but more importantly, she benefits from the fact that the excitement around the campaign is separate from the policies. She's getting good vibes, good energy. She's getting support from people who don't want to see another Trump. It's not the policies that matter to them, it's that she presents a hopeful, positive campaign. But if she doesn't back it up with policies, the excitement will die out,” Mitchell said.
Since becoming the party's new presidential nominee, Harris has come under fire for her sway over issues such as police budget cuts, a major expansion of Medicare and fracking. While the Harris campaign has not yet released a definitive list of policies the vice president supports, she has posted about specific issues, Explain to the press Where does the Vice President stand on issues like the border and green energy?
