George Washington University (GW) suspended two pro-Palestinian activist groups and placed six students on probation on Monday in an effort to prevent renewed protests on campus, according to the Jewish News Agency (JTA).
GW has suspended chapters of Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) and Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) again, following previous suspensions last fall for projecting messages such as “Glory to the Martyrs” and “Free Palestine from the River to the Sea” on campus buildings and the JTA. ReportedThe suspension means the group will no longer receive financial support or official recognition from the university. “GW authorities may suspend our organization and strip us of our funding, but they can never crush the student movement,” the JVP and SJP said in a joint statement. post On Monday, they protested at the university together with the George Washington University chapter and the Palestinian Students Union. “We will continue to resist.”
“GW takes seriously our commitment to freedom of expression, ensuring the safety of our community, and upholding our teaching and research mission,” a GW spokesperson told the Daily Caller News Foundation. “As befits an institution of higher education, GW is obligated to address violations of university policies, regardless of the message protesters are attempting to convey. We do this through our Student Code of Conduct, which provides for a fair review process that includes fellow students.”
On October 9, 2023, just two days after a Hamas terror attack left some 1,200 Israelis dead, George W. Bush's Israel People's Party (SJP) issued a statement saying it “fully supports the liberation of the homeland and the right of its people to resist by any means necessary the 75-year-old violent colonization of their homeland.”
Protesters at the university also organized an encampment last year to protest Israel's war actions, which was cleared by police last May just hours before Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser was to testify before Congress about the protests.
GWU’s Jewish Voice for Peace and Students for Palestine Justice did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
