When the Boston Red Sox take on the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday, Red Sox catcher Danny Jansen will have the chance to become the first player in MLB history to play for two teams in the same game, WBZ reported.
Jansen, who started in the Blue Jays vs. Red Sox game on June 26, was at bat in the top of the second inning when the game was stopped due to rain. WikipediaHe was then traded to Boston before MLB's trade deadline on July 30. The June 26 game was ultimately canceled and will now be played as part of a doubleheader at Fenway on Monday, giving Jansen a chance to make history, WBZ reported. According to the media, Reese McGwire, who started for the Red Sox on June 26, was subsequently demoted to Triple-A Worcester.
Connor Wong has played catcher for the majority of the Red Sox's games this year, but with two full games scheduled for Monday, it's likely Jansen and Wong will share catching duties. MLB.com Reported.
Janssen He told The Athletic It's “something unique” and would be “amazing” if Red Sox manager Alex Cora puts him in the lineup on Monday.
When Jansen was traded, he said, “I don't even know how this works. I've heard it a few times,” according to MLB.com.
When play resumes, Jansen will bat for the Blue Jays and take over the no-ball, one-strike count he faced when play was stopped, according to MLB.com. However, because Jansen is now with the Red Sox, the Blue Jays will likely have to send in a pinch-hitter.
According to MLB.com, if Cora starts Jansen at catcher, he will have the opportunity to start as a hitter and finish at-bats as catcher.
Under MLB rules, the pinch hitter will be credited with an at-bat because Jansen had fewer than two strikes when the game was stopped, MLB.com reported. Otherwise, if the pinch hitter struck out, Jansen could be credited for catching Jansen's strikeout.
Still, if Jansen plays, his name will be on the box score for both Toronto and Boston, according to MLB.com.
“That would be interesting, wouldn't it?” Jansen told reporters.
