SAFORD — Details have been released about the crash south of Safford that claimed the life of a 17-year-old girl on Wednesday.
The incident occurred at approximately 10:39 a.m., with witnesses driving behind a CKC dump truck on the southbound lane of U.S. Route 191 when the Chevrolet Suburban was pulled onto the highway from Cactus Street. reported. Suburban quickly dumped him into his truck, he was T-boned and pushed into a canal.
A Graham County sheriff’s deputy was the first to arrive on the scene and was able to rescue a Suburban passenger who complained of stomach pains. However, the driver was unresponsive and not breathing, and the co-pilot performed CPR on him for seven minutes until paramedics with an ambulance arrived.
The driver could not be resuscitated and was declared dead at 10:57 am. The victim’s name has not yet been released.
The dump truck driver was not injured.
The Arizona Department of Public Safety has command of the incident and reports that an investigation is ongoing.
