MSNBC host Ayman Mohyeldin and guest Molly Jong Fast said Thursday that Vice President Kamala Harris and running mate Tim Walz have “redefined” the meaning of “freedom” during their campaigns.
Harris has seen a surge in support from lawmakers, donors and other politicians since becoming the Democratic presidential nominee after President Joe Biden ended his reelection bid on July 21. On “Deadline: The White House,” Moyerdin and Jongfast discussed how Harris and Walz have redefined “freedom” that was previously “monopolized by the Republican Party.”
“The concept of freedom has been pretty much a Republican monopoly. It's always been Republican. But I think there's been a remarkable shift, to the vice president's credit and, of course, to Tim Walz's credit,” Moyeldin said.
“They redefined freedom to mean they are the guardians of our freedom, to protect a woman's right to choose, to protect her body, to vote for who she wants, to love who she wants without government interference,” Moyeldin continued. “It's really an incredible change that has happened in just a few weeks.”
Jongfast echoed Moyeldin's comments, noting that Harris is “good at bringing clarity” to issues in a short space of time. (RELATED: CNN analyst says Harris' 'worst' interview moment has made campaign hesitant to meet with reporters)
“This was a given, but I don't think Democrats really knew what to do with it until Harris-Waltz came on board, and they've done a really good job of that,” John-Fast said. “She's really good at, I mean, stylistically, making things very clear in a very short space of time and letting the listener know exactly what she's talking about. And then she brings it back to Trump and Trumpism and Project 2025 in a really, really tactful and smart way.”

“Waltz has a totally different style, but he puts it well when he says people should just focus on themselves,” Jongfast said. “Republicans have been saying for a long time that they don't want the government to interfere in other people's business. But Republican policy is to make sure women don't have Republican politicians in their doctor's offices. Nobody wants that. So I think it's really refreshing to see them do that, and in a way it's great.” [this].”
Despite the party dynamic, Harris has been criticized multiple times for gaffes during unscripted interviews, but the vice president's online supporters are voicing her famous lines about falling from a coconut tree and “being free from the burdens I've been carrying.” Viral memes Since she became a presidential candidate.
