‘A Flag That So Many Have Died For’: Oklahoma Superintendent Slams ‘Anti-American’ Discipline Of Patriotic Student

Oklahoma Superintendent Ryan Walters, who changed state school rules after a student was disciplined for displaying an American flag on his truck, blasted the incident as “anti-American” in an interview on “Fox & Friends Weekend” on Saturday.

Caleb Horst, a senior at Edmond North High School, said the school district asked him to remove the American flag from his car over the weekend, citing safety concerns, or he would face disciplinary action on Aug. 26. Many students and adults showed up in cars flying American flags to protest the district's warning.

In response to the incident, Governor Walters announced new rules allowing the flying of the American flag. The state superintendent also announced that schools must lead students in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance at least once a week. He added that schools must submit a report detailing their policies regarding the American flag and the Pledge of Allegiance.

“We are not going to tolerate this anti-Americanism. We know it's being pushed by the administration, the teachers unions, the far left. We are not going to tolerate it in our schools. We want patriots. We want our students to fly the American flag,” Walters told “Fox & Friends Weekend” co-host Pete Hegseth.

“Here's the reality,” the state superintendent continued. “This flag is something that we have the right to fly, and that so many have risked their lives to protect so that we can become the greatest country in the history of the world. We want our kids to know that. We want our kids to love this flag and love this country. So we acted immediately and said, 'This will never happen again.' Every school in the state will protect the right of their students to fly the flag. We will fly our flag and promote patriotism in Oklahoma schools.”

Walters told Hegseth that schools must strive to provide better social studies programs to teach students about the founding of the United States. He stressed that students must develop a “love of country.” (RELATED: University of Oklahoma football stadium sings patriotic anthem in memory of late Toby Keith)

“We need more patriotism. Our schools have become left-wing indoctrination factories pushing hatred towards our country. That can't happen in Oklahoma.”
