‘Put Up A Good Fight’: 90-Year-Old WWII Vet Fatally Shot, Run Over During Suspected Carjacking

A 90-year-old military veteran was shot and killed during a suspected carjacking outside a Houston senior living facility on Saturday, KPRC 2 reports.

Witnesses said the suspect allegedly began arguing with the veteran before gunshots were heard. KPRC2.

After shooting and killing the veteran, who witnesses referred to as “Mr. Nelson,” the suspect allegedly ran over Mr. Nelson with the victim's vehicle as he fled the scene, according to KPRC, and then abandoned the car at an apartment building about three miles from the crime scene, the outlet reported.

Paramedics tried to save Nelson but were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead a short time later at a local hospital, according to KPRC. (Related article: Plumber uses baseball bat against carjacker who allegedly killed 80-year-old woman)

“I heard some guys arguing and then I heard gunshots so I ran into the garage,” Rod Bosson, who lives near Nelson's apartment, told KPRC.

Nelson was a World War II veteran and had been out running errands, Bosson said. KHOU11.

“He had a small shopping cart and a scuffle ensued,” Bosson told KHOU 11. “He apparently put up a good fight. That's when he was shot. When the suspect backed away, he struck (the victim).”

Police said Nelson did not know his attacker, who is on the run and is believed to be “armed and dangerous,” KPRC reported.

In response to the incident, Bosson told KHOU 11, “I'm saddened, upset and frustrated. I mean, you're attacking seniors. It's unfortunate what happened. This is a retirement community. It's unfortunate that they're seen as an easy target.”

Police did not provide a description of the suspect but asked anyone with information about the incident to contact them, KHOU11 reported.

“This is just so pathetic, that's all,” said Houston Police Lt. Jonathan French.
