White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre on Tuesday laughed off a question from Fox News White House correspondent Peter Doocy about Vice President Kamala Harris' Southern accent during a recent speech.
Harris is Born In Oakland, California, talk Harris praised unions in speeches on Monday in Detroit, Michigan, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in a Southern accent. Jean-Pierre suggested Doocy's questions were off the mark and argued that Americans don't care how Harris speaks.
“Since when has the vice president had a Southern accent?” Doocy asked.
“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” Jean-Pierre responded, “I mean, this is… I mean, do you hear the question you’re asking? [asking]”Do you think people really think this is an important issue? You know what people care about? The economy, cost savings, health care, that's what Americans care about. That's what they want to hear. That's what they want to hear.”

Jean-Pierre said the question was “pretty stupid” to even ask, and Doocy asked if Harris would speak like that in White House meetings.
“Is that how she speaks here in meetings?” Doocy continued.
“I just…Peter, we're moving forward. We're really moving forward,” Jean-Pierre said, addressing another reporter.

Harris appeared to speak in a thick Southern accent at a rally in Atlanta, Georgia on July 31 as she proclaimed that Democrats would win the 2024 election.
