Ben JoyceThe Los Angeles Angels rookie relief pitcher threw a blistering 105.5 mph fastball in Tuesday's game against the rival Dodgers. Not only is this top-tier pitch the fastest in MLB for the 2024 season, but it's also the fastest strikeout pitch of the modern era — specifically, the pitch-tracking era that began in 2008.
In the bottom of the Dodgers' top of the ninth, Joyce struck out the shortstop. Tommy EdmanJoyce could throw 105.5 mph in college baseball while at Tennessee, but could only hit 104.5 mph in the pros…until Tuesday night. September 2010: Current Pittsburgh Pirates relief pitcher Aroldis Chapman Chapman recorded a 105.8 mph pitch, then 105.7 mph five years later in July 2016.
