Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo on Monday tried to explain why the vice president's availability for interviews has been limited, citing Vice President Kamala Harris' busy schedule.
Since President Joe Biden announced on July 21 that he was withdrawing his intention to seek reelection, Harris has not given any sit-down interviews or press conferences, other than one with CNN host Dana Bash and Democratic Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz on Aug. 29. Raimondo tried to deflect a question from “Squawk Box” co-host Joe Kernen about Harris's lack of interaction with reporters, claiming that she is “talking to the American people.” (RELATED: “Conversations About Twists and Turns”: Harris Faulkner grills Democratic guest about Kamala's backslide on plastic straw ban)

“This is totally different than other presidential elections. She has only a few weeks to do it all. She's spending her time talking to the American people,” Raimondo told Kernen. “She's got a grueling schedule, all over the place, meeting with the people she wants to elect. But it's going to come together tomorrow night. It's going to be a lively debate. What I see, and I know from my previous roles as governor or even running a business before that, is someone who has a vision and who has been very clear about her desire to support business and small business. She's said she's pro-business and pro-worker.”
The CNN interview lasted about 30 minutes, but Harris did not explain why her aides have shifted her positions on several issues since the 2020 presidential election.
“I think Donald Trump is a very unpredictable ruler. One day he'll suddenly get angry about one area and he'll lash out at that area, and I think his tariff proposals, quite frankly, are really frightening and erratic,” Raimondo argued. “America can't afford that, can we? Businesses can't afford that. Families can't afford that. I think it's pretty clear which one would be better for the economy.”
The New York Times/Siena College vote A poll released Sunday found that 55% of voters believe Trump is better suited to manage the economy, while 42% said the same about Harris.
