Safford – On Tuesday, the Safford Police Department issued a press release regarding a double homicide in midtown Safford early Monday morning.
Officers were initially dispatched to a residence on the 1200 block of Central Avenue at 1:52 a.m. regarding the robbery, according to a release.
The homeowners said a man they identified as their neighbor, Miguel Garcia, 24, entered their residence and approached them with a knife.
According to the release, the resident attempted to escape to the bedroom and then the bathroom, but Miguel Garcia continued to approach.
At that point, the resident retrieved a pistol and shot and killed the assailant after warning him to stop. Miguel Garcia was pronounced dead at the scene.

Another victim was found dead in the bedroom when officers tried to contact Miguel Garcia’s next-door neighbor.
The release reports that initial evidence and statements suggest that Miguel Garcia acted alone. SPD investigation is ongoing.
Police kept the area off limits for much of the morning while they were working at the crime scene. The SPD was assisted by the Graham County Sheriff’s Office and the Thatcher Police Department.
