YUMA, Arizona — Two senators from Arizona traveled to Yuma on Tuesday to tour the border.
When they wrapped up, they facilitated discussions with leaders across the country.
The focus of the discussion is the impact of this crisis on border communities, which community leaders say are now paying a price.
Senator Kirsten Cinema said, “The federal government has been unable to secure our borders for years.
Senator Kirsten Cinema, along with Senator Mark Kelly, began discussions with world leaders.
“We cannot continue to be held accountable for the federal government’s failure at the border,” said Senator Cinema.
More work needs to be done to help the crisis along the U.S.-Mexico border.
“We can protect our borders, treat immigrants fairly, and strengthen border communities and economies. We need to,” Senator Cinema said.
Senator Mark Kelly agrees.
“Fortunately, today there is a group that wants to educate themselves and do something about this issue,” Senator Kerry said.
Yuma Mayor Douglas Nichols, among those in attendance, expressed concern.
He said the impact of nearly 1,000 migrants crossing the border into Yuma every day is hurting the city.
“Our hospitals have seen a dramatic increase in traffic as well as costs because many of these burdens have not been repaid by the federal government. It’s actually borne by citizens, and those are real dollars. It’s a lot of money to absorb $20 million in six months,” said Mayor Nicholls.
Yuma County Supervisor (Second District) Jonathan Lines told ABC15 that Senators Cinema and Senator Kelly have acknowledged the issue, and that hospital reimbursement is part of the debate.
Lines is also pleased that all parties are acknowledging the problems at the border.
“Democrat mayors and other Democrats said after seeing this, this is not sustainable. I understand how they devastated security and turned them into babysitters because they couldn’t focus on national security,” Lines said.
Recognizing the problem is one thing, but we still need concrete solutions.
Senator Kerry said: “It’s clear that there is much more to be done.
Other leaders also told ABC15 they were pleased with the new border enforcement program, which will increase security at borders and help reduce the number of individuals illegally crossing between ports of entry.
