The Sedona International Film Festival is proud to announce the Northern Arizona premiere of “Sugar Cane,” screening September 20-26 at the Alice Gill Sheldon Theatre.
A stunning tribute to Indigenous resilience and their way of life, “Sugarcane” is the feature-length documentary debut from Julian Brave Noisecat and Emily Cathy, and is an epic cinematic portrayal of a community at a moment of international judgment.
In 2021, evidence of unmarked graves was discovered on the grounds of Indigenous residential schools run by the Catholic Church in Canada. After years of silence, the forced separation, assimilation and abuse experienced by many children in these segregated residential schools has come to light, sparking a nationwide outcry against a system designed to destroy Indigenous communities.
Set against the backdrop of groundbreaking research, “Sugar Cane” highlights the beauty of a community breaking the cycle of intergenerational trauma and finding the strength to persevere.
“Sugar Cane” will run from September 20-26 at the Alice Gill Sheldon Theatre. Show times are Friday and Thursday, September 20 and 26 at 3:30 pm, Saturday, September 21 at 12:30 pm, and Monday and Tuesday, September 23 and 24 at 6:30 pm.
Tickets are $12, or $9 for festival members. For tickets or more information, call 928-282-1177. Both the theater and festival offices are at 2030 W. Hwy. 89A in West Sedona. For more information, visit www.SedonaFilmFestival.org.
