NAU Golf Returns to Action at Golfweek Red Sky Classic

Flagstaff, Arizona (September 22, 2024) – The Northern Arizona women's golf team is heading to Vail, Colorado this week for the Golfweek Red Sky Classic, where 14 teams will play 18 holes on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at Red Sky Golf Club (par 72, 6,305 yards).

“We're very excited to be back at Red Sky this year. It's one of our favorite tournaments and courses so it's great to be back out there,” said the head coach. Brad Bedosa He said.

This is the third time the Lumberjacks have played in the tournament. Northern Arizona has had a lot of success on this golf course in the past. In their first time playing the course in 2021, the team shot 279 in the first round, which was the second-lowest round in program history at the time and set a new school record for lowest round-to-par. The Jacks were in the lead after the first day. Former Lumberjack Elle Kokrukova had a hole-in-one on the 132-yard, par-3 17th hole to finish with a career-low 4-under-par 68. She became the first Lumberjack to achieve a hole-in-one since Sofia Anokhina did so in the third round of the 2017 Red Rocks Invitational.

The last time they played there was in 2022 was in Jr. Lizzie Neal She recorded her first round of par as a freshman and led the NAU golf team with a team-leading 72 on the first day. Elena Slater Slater and Neal both finished under par in the third round: Slater shot a two-under-par 70 and Neal shot a one-under-par 71, both with four birdies.

“One of the things that makes this tournament fun is that I get to play against a lot of different teams that I don't normally see,” Bedosa said. “I've had some really great practice this week and a good practice round today, so I'm ready to give it my all.”

This year's participating teams include Mercer University, South Dakota State University, University of North Carolina at Asheville, University of Denver, University of Kansas, Arkansas State University, Eastern Michigan University, Boise State University, East Tennessee State University, Pepperdine University, Sacramento State University, Wichita State University and University of California, Irvine.

After a two-week break since their season opener at New Mexico, the Lumberjacks look to build momentum at the Red Sky, with their next game being the Edisto Island Invitational, Oct. 14-15 in Edisto Island, South Carolina.
