Dear MUSD Parents:
We would like to inform you of a recent incident that occurred near the MUSD bus stop that was reported to the Maricopa Police Department. Last night, police confirmed that a student reported an accident with a white man, approximately 30 years old, who was driving a gray Toyota Corolla. The individual exposed himself to students near the school bus stop at Bedford Drive and Rancho El Dorado Parkway. The Maricopa Police Department is actively investigating this incident and is working with us to keep everyone updated.
We understand this news is alarming and want to ensure everyone is aware and prepared. To keep your child safe, please review the following safety tips with your child.
Advice for children:
· Don't go anywhere with people you don't know. Always remain visible to others.
· Stay away from adults who ask for help. If someone asks for directions or claims they need help, keep your distance.
· Don't let strangers into your home. Do not open your door to strangers for any reason.
・If you feel uncomfortable or scared, please leave the area. Trust your intuition and walk away from the situation.
· If someone grabs you, act quickly. Turn your arms like a windmill and run away screaming.
・When riding a bicycle, please ride with an adult. This creates a barrier and allows you to keep your distance.
Advice for parents:
· Supervise your children carefully when they are outside the house or in the park.
· Ensure all outdoor activities are supervised. Children should not be left unsupervised in public.
· Teach your children to call 911 from any phone. In case of emergency.
· Empower your children to say “no” If something doesn't feel right or makes you feel uncomfortable.
· Update your child's photos regularly. Photograph them at least once a year, and more often if they are under 5 years old.
We hope you find these tips useful when discussing safety with your child. Make time to have this important conversation and emphasize the importance of staying safe and reporting activities to a trusted adult. If you have any questions or need further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact the Maricopa Police Department.
Thank you for your consideration and for helping us keep our community safe.
Sincerely,
Dr. Tracy Lopeman, Superintendent
Maricopa Unified School District
