Democratic strategist James Carville said on Tuesday's podcast that Democrats are relieved to support Vice President Kamala Harris as their nominee after President Joe Biden halted his re-election campaign, calling it ” He likened it to having an infected wisdom tooth removed.
When Biden ended his re-election campaign and endorsed Harris on July 21, Democrats, experts and others quickly rallied behind her. When asked on “Pod Save America” if he was surprised the party was supporting Harris, Carville explained that he wasn't.
“No, I think it was clear that people wanted something different. [It was] About 72% wanted something different. [and] 60% of Democrats did,” Carville said. “My analogy is if you have an infected wisdom tooth and you get it removed, you feel better. You're never going to feel better than if you didn't have your wisdom tooth. When you hear the fact that your wisdom tooth is gone, You think, “Oh, I'm on top of the world now.''
“I'm sure it affected you too. I got my first text message at 12:45 central time. I was listening to political radio and I don't know what it was. I forgot. [Within an] Chubu time 1:45 [Time] you knew that [was] I'm already calling[ed]I had no appetite for anything else,” Carville said.
Next, the show's co-host Jon Favreau addressed initial concerns that Harris appeared to be “anointed” by Democrats and that Harris would not accept other challengers within the party. We asked Democratic Party strategists for their thoughts on the process behind this. Carville said how Harris has “grown” since the 2020 campaign, adding how the party has great potential. The vice president finally won enough support from Democratic National Convention (DNC) delegates on July 23, shortly after Harris received Biden's endorsement.
“If President Biden had resigned on June 15th, we might have been in big trouble — one thing I'm sure of is that the level of talent in the Democratic Party right now is “This is the highest level of talent I've ever seen in a political party in my lifetime,” Carville continued. “So if you look at the potential presidential candidates that we had, they all seem to have really world-class talent.”
“Harris has proven that she's much better than people think she is. The other thing is that she wants people to say, 'She's gotten so much better.' I like people [who] work at the white house [say] She became more confident…everyone saw her 2[020] The presidential campaign — oh, that stunk — but she grew up,” Carville said.
