The Sedona Police Department will hold its annual community outreach event at the Sedona Posse Grounds Hub at Posse Grounds Park on Oct. 5 from 3 to 5 p.m.
The event, hosted by Sedona Police Department volunteers, will include demonstrations by SPD K-9 and drone units, the Coconino and Yavapai County Sheriff’s Offices, the Sedona Fire District, and other local organizations, as well as face painting, hot dogs, Includes hamburgers, chips, etc.
“This is bridging the gap between the community and first responders, and when you attend an event or visit our booth, you can even see how we can work together for what is needed in the community. We can,” said SPD Lt. Raquel Oliver. .

SPD Detective Justin White gives a short demonstration using SPD’s drone to show off its surveillance capabilities.
“Our drone program is still in its infancy. We’re just barely getting it off the ground,” White said. “Currently we use it primarily for search and rescue. I have supported the use of national parks. We have used it to search for missing people, barricades are erected and , there were some incidents where people headed into the woods, etc. We went out and searched the campsite…if there was a suspect in the area that I knew…I was in the area as well. The ministry initially acquired two drones. Five more were recently donated by the Chandler Police Department. White said there are plans to train four to five more SPD officers to operate the drones.
SPD K-9 Officer Katherine Beers and K-9 Sam will also be giving public demonstrations.
“It was a lot of work because we train every day,” Beals said. “Sam has been placed not only in Sedona, but also in neighboring agencies in the Verde Valley. On-call is different. I’ve never been in an on-call position, and it’s not the same as a regular K-to-K. We have also found it rewarding to have a fearless dog as we can use the dog in different ways at different local events.This unit is used throughout the city.”

The Verde Valley Fire District was scheduled to hold its first Verde Valley Regional Fire Prevention Day in Cottonwood that same day, but the event was postponed due to the off-duty death of Copper Canyon Fire and Medical District Firefighter Shane Gage on Friday, September 27th.
