The Prescott Badgers needed overtime to beat the overtime-heavy Coconino Panther team 80-78. This was Prescott’s first win at Coconino since the Badgers won 60–48 on December 16, 2013, snapping his eighth straight loss at Pantherville.
Prescott won the first meeting of the season, 74-44. This game ended early. This he seldom happens when the two teams meet on the court. “When I joined, I knew this wasn’t the same team I saw here a few weeks ago. I also had to deal with the players we didn’t face in our first meeting.” Badgers coach Travis Steadman said: “Coconino is always a very tough place. The atmosphere is intense. Regarding the regional title fight with Bradshaw Mountain, Stedman added.
Badgers took an early lead and bounced from 1 to 6 to go 27-21 with 5:37 left in the second quarter. Prescott maintains the lead with a 38-30 halftime advantage.
The lead widens to 44-30, but the Panthers battle to close the gap to 44-36. Another thing happened during Coconino’s comeback. Midway through the third quarter he was called for his fourth foul on Uriah Tenette, creating a string of problems for the Badgers. “I had to sit him down for a bit, but I knew I couldn’t keep him out for long,” Stedman said.
Prescott was stuck at 48, allowing Coconino to return to the game and tie the game on a 9-0 run. The Badgers scored his next five points and after three quarters he leads 53-50. Meanwhile, midway through the third quarter, he was called for his fourth foul on Uriah Tenette, creating a string of problems for the Badgers.
With the game remaining close in the final eight minutes, Coconino managed to tie the game on 67 and take a 70-67 lead with just 1:18 remaining. Jake Hilton dropped his pointer three, making it a tied game as well. Trailing at 72-70, the Badgers tied the game with his 5 seconds left before Cooper Magnet fouled and calmly sank both free throws and sent the game into overtime.
Overtime was just as intense as the first 32 minutes. Prescott jumped up 77-72 with two baskets, one for Uriah Tenet and one for Magnet’s 3-pointer. Again Coconino came back and on a 6-0 run he took a 78-77 lead with a clock of :22. Badgers moved the ball inside and Zane Gaul shorted a range He put his basket inside to take a 79-78 lead. The Panthers’ quick shot attempt missed and Tenet was fouled. Tenet converted only one of the two, leaving the door open, but the Panthers’ final shot was edged, giving the Badgers a hard-hitting 80–78 victory.
Playing one quarter and overtime with four fouls, Uriah Tenette had 28 points and seven assists. Jake Hilton had 16 points and Zane Gaur had 14 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks on the inside. Ivory Washington led the Panthers with 22 before fouling out. Prescott freed his throws on his line and he won all the important fights 14-7, while Coconino beat the Badgers with his three pointers 7-6.
