Results show many Arizona school bonds, overrides failing

As of Wednesday afternoon, 18 of Maricopa County’s 27 bond/override elections had passed.

PHOENIX — As Maricopa County election officials continue to count votes, several large public school districts in the Valley are unable to pass bail bonds or overrides.

As of Wednesday afternoon, 18 of Maricopa County’s 27 bond/override elections had passed.

School districts that are falling behind include Deer Valley Unified Schools, Peoria Unified Schools, Buckeye Union High School District, Chandler Unified School District and Higley Unified School District.

Local property taxes are used to fund everything from full-day kindergarten operating costs to building repairs and teacher pay raises.

Districts where voters consistently pass local tax increases include: glendale union (9 to 10), Alhambra Elementary School District (10 to 12), Phoenix Union High School District (11 to 13), tempe school (12 to 12), Mesa Unified (7 vs. 8), and Flagstaff Unified (11 vs. 12).

Other local districts have seen mixed results since the 2008 recession. Peoria Unified (42 schools) is 9-4. Dysert integration (27 schools) is 9-3. Queen Creek Unified (17 schools) was 5 out of 11 students.

During this time, three districts in the East Valley have struggled the most. JO Comms Unified (8 schools) is 1 in 6 students. Apache junction integration (6 schools) is 6 and 0. Cave Creek Unified (7 schools) is 1 in 6 students.

“It feels like there’s a public school backlash, and we’re fighting against it,” said Rebecca Gow of the nonprofit Stand for Children.

Educators agree that real estate values around a school district should not determine the quality of education. But combining and nullifying elections can create disparities over time. For example, Tempe schools have passed 12 of the past 12 bonds and overrides. In contrast, Cave Creek Unified has passed only one of its past six and Apachejunction has passed none of its past six.

Bonds and overrides are typically more difficult to pass in rural areas.
