Claire Foy says love for Imelda Staunton enticed her back to The Crown

Claire Foy said she reprized her role as Queen in the latest series of The Crown because of her love for Imelda Staunton and because “it’s great.”

The 38-year-old actress appears in a flashback scene at the beginning of the fifth series of the Netflix drama series, which shows the late Queen’s visit to Clydebank in 1953 to launch the Royal Yacht Britannia.

Foy played the Queen in the first two series, Olivia Coleman in series 3 and 4, and Stanton the star in series 5 and 6.

Speaking on The Graham Norton Show, she said:

Production on The Crown’s sixth and final series is underway, with scenes filming at Winchester Cathedral this week.

Foy also spoke about her film, Women Talking, about a group of women who seek to bring to light a series of sexual assaults by some of their male members in a segregated religious colony.

Inspired by real events in Bolivia, the film also stars Rooney Mara, Jesse Buckley, Ben Whishaw and Frances McDormand and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture.

Asked if she would be attending the ceremony in March, Foy said, “I don’t know. There are 12 cast members, so it’s up to them who they go with.

“It’s my kid’s birthday that day, so you probably shouldn’t go. Either way, I’m going to have a great time.”

When asked about playing a member of the Mennonite community, she added: Shave your legs.

“I thought I would be energized without having to worry about shaving, but it was actually terrifying and reminded me of puberty.”

The Graham Norton Show will air on BBC One and iPlayer on Friday 27th January at 10:40pm.
