Maricopa SWAT incident ends in one arrest

Police said the suspect fled the traffic stop and barricaded himself inside a home.

MARICOPA, Ariz. — A man was arrested Tuesday after a standoff with the Pinal County Regional SWAT Team.

Just before noon, officers attempted to stop a driver in the area of ​​John Wayne Parkway and Honeycutt Avenue, according to the Maricopa Police Department.

Officers said the driver fled from officers and barricaded himself in a home in the 45000 block of Morning View Lane.

The suspect, later identified as Steven Meriwether, 31, hid in the attic and later in an upstairs bedroom.

SWAT team members were called to assist in negotiations, which lasted at least two hours, police said.

The SWAT team then used chemical agents to remove Meriwether from the home and took him into custody around 6:30 p.m.

Meriwether has been charged with unlawful flight and a warrant is pending.
