Yuma County’s marathon getting ready to take off

Yuma County residents and guests are preparing for quite the journey

Somerton, AZ (KYMA, KECY) – For runners looking to qualify for the Boston Marathon, now is your chance.

The 14th Annual Yuma Territorial Marathon and Half Marathon will be held Saturday at Cocopa Casino. You still have time to register.

Registration will take place in front of Cocopa Resort on Friday until 8:30pm and tomorrow at 6am before the race.

Men and women have their own categories, but this year organizer Caballeros de Yuma added a relay to get more people involved.

Brian Gullen, president of the Yuma Territorial Marathon and Half Marathon, explained how to relay the marathon route with four people, each running a section of about six miles.

“It’s a way to bring more of the team concept in so that people who aren’t as enthusiastic about running half marathons, 10Ks, or marathons can be part of a team,” Gelen explained. .

More than 300 people have already signed up to take part in this year’s race, but Geren says there are usually many late sign-ups. Over the past few years they have seen up to 500 participants.

Geren said the registration money will be used to host more events.

“The funds we generate go back to the community. We use these events to promote Yuma. We bring in people from outside,” Gelen continued.

He said he encourages people from out of town and people of all ages to get involved.

The Marathon Route begins in front of the Cocopa Casino and follows the northbound shoulder of US Route 95 between the Cocopa Resort and the San Luis city limits.

The first race starts at 7:00 am and all races finish at 1:00 pm. Please do your best!
