Corporate America Touts Funding Employee ‘Abortion Travel’ But Is Largely Silent On Child Care Benefits, Report Finds

A report released Tuesday found that many Fortune 100 companies offer paid “abortion travel” benefits but do not publicly share child care benefits.

At least 42 Fortune 100 companies, including Walmart, Amazon, and Walt Disney, have publicly said they pay for employees to travel out of state to obtain abortions, but they do not offer child care benefits. The report says many companies cover the cost of an employee’s abortion, which can run into the thousands of dollars for out-of-state travel, because it’s cheaper than offering paid maternity leave or other child care benefits. “Transparency is important because it reveals whether companies are providing support to parents and families,” the report says. “Surprisingly, the companies that offer the strongest family benefits and are the most transparent about their benefits are also more likely to announce coverage for abortion and abortion-related travel expenses.”
