Jonathan Turley, a law professor at George Washington University, said Thursday in response to the release of a new report that there are “more questions than answers” about the role of an FBI informant in the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol. There were more,” he said.
On January 6, 2021, hundreds of people stormed the Capitol during the certification of electoral votes. According to one report, the FBI has arrested more than 1,500 people in connection with the riot. report By Michael Horowitz, Inspector General of the Department of Justice. Mr Turley said the presence of informants who were not asked to attend would be of interest to the defense. “Well, in a way, it raises more questions than it answers. I support that. [FBI Director Christopher] Ray’s testimony was that there were no undercover agents in the crowd. It’s going to be of great concern to other people as to what the sources were doing there,” Turley told Fox News host Martha McCallum.
clock:
“We were told only three of them would be there. The problem is really the other people,” Turley said. “We’ve had cases in the past where the defense argued that sources and investigators were very aggressive in inciting people to commit criminal acts. We’ve had cases in the Michigan case involving the governor I saw the allegations raised there.”
In Michigan, the FBI’s investigation into an alleged plot to kidnap Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer was criticized. Two men charged in connection with the investigation said they were coaxed into participating in the scheme by an FBI informant. They were convicted in the second trial after a hung jury in the first trial.
“I think some defense attorneys may raise questions. [as to] If they weren’t told about confidential information sources that might be closely related to their case, then why weren’t they told? Usually defense attorneys ask what kind of assets and personnel the government has there. Because I want to know what happened. So those kinds of questions will arise,” Turley told McCallum.
“The treatment of sources will also be a subject of continued discussion,” Turley said. “This is a department where someone made a shock and awe announcement and they were going to go after everyone they could to stop any future illegal activity. And for these three… , there was much less shock and awe in the way they were treated. ”
