Flagstaff is hoping for a warm, green Christmas
In Arizona, businesses are adjusting to warmer-than-usual temperatures for the Christmas season. FOX 10’s Lauren Clark has this story.
Flagstaff, Arizona – It’s December 17th on the calendar, but the temperature outside feels like October.
Temperatures are about 5 to 15 degrees warmer in Phoenix and Flagstaff, and Christmas pine trees cover the landscape, but no snowballs in sight.
“It’s great, it’s a great day. The temperature is perfect for walking around downtown,” said Julie Arnold from Arizona.
Carolers may be singing about a white Christmas in downtown Flagstaff, but it’s becoming a green Christmas in this typically snowy region.
There are lots of Christmas trees, wreaths, and lights on display, but the only snowmen here are made of plastic.
“I like warm weather because it’s easier to get out and move around and shop, but at the same time I like seeing snow,” said another pedestrian in Flagstaff.

Ski House and Ski Shop still sees customers checking out boots and skis, but owner Matt Schmidgall says warmer-than-normal temperatures are keeping customers away.
“We’re definitely feeling the effects of the warmer weather,” he says.
“Usually this season we have a huge influx of holiday travelers. From rentals to Christmas presents, it’s a gift for those who got their Christmas money. That’s the gift for them.”
Customers still come here to check out boots and skis, and Matt said there’s still plenty of snow on the mountain for quality skiing and snowboarding.
“I was just there and it was really, really good. The conditions were great for what kind of season we’ve had so far,” he said.
But with seven days left until Christmas, northern Arizona is still dreaming of a white Christmas.
“It would be amazing, not just for skiing and snowboarding, but for the city as well. A city covered in snow is so beautiful,” Matt said.
Although there are no snowflakes, Christmas activities like the Little America Hotel and the North Pole Experience will still be open.
