Lawsuit settlement shuts down Laveen composting facility

LAVINE, Ariz. — A mulching facility in Lavine will be permanently closed following a lawsuit from Maricopa County.

ABC15 has been following this case for the past year and has heard numerous complaints from residents about strange odors coming from the facility.

On Thursday, Maricopa County announced the facility, located near 27th Street and Dobbins Road, would cease operations pursuant to a court settlement.

The county first filed a legal complaint against Growers Market on Dec. 18.

The settlement means the company will be prohibited from operating a composting facility on the property. The company also agreed to a list of strict county provisions that mandate the suspension of business operations and the removal of hazardous materials.

“This settlement is a huge victory for LaVine community members,” said District 5 Supervisor Steve Gallardo. “This business could have stayed open for months while we waited for a court hearing to be scheduled. Instead, we took the complaints seriously and took action. ” to hold this company accountable and prioritize results. ”

According to the settlement, the property must be vacated by March 1.
