California Speaker Lost For Words After He’s Asked if Dems Care More About Trump-Proofing State Than Deadly Wildfires

California Democratic state Rep. Robert Rivas declined Thursday to answer questions about when a special legislative session will be called to allocate $25 million to the state to fight President-elect Donald Trump’s second administration.

Wildfires have ravaged multiple jurisdictions in the Los Angeles area, killing at least five people and destroying hundreds of buildings.

KCRA-TV’s Ashley Zavala asked Rivas whether the timing of the special session was appropriate to increase resources for legal battles with the incoming Trump administration. “So, um, I’m here to deal with this, this, you know, these, these… wildfires. This is a historic… wildfire. This is a historic event. And as I said, these wildfires are very likely to be the worst wildfires and disasters in our state’s history,” Rivas said.

California’s Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, called a special session of Congress on November 7, two days after Trump defeated Vice President Kamala Harris in the presidential election.

Zavala asked whether now was “the right time.”
