Yuma agriculture contributes $4.4 billion to Arizona economy, study says

Recent economic impact studies highlight the important role of Yuma County in Arizona’s economy. In 2022, Yuma’s agriculture and agribusiness sector donated $4.4 billion to Arizona’s economy and $3.9 billion to Yuma County alone.

The study also shows that Yuma-grown produce has produced an impressive $3.2 billion retail price, positioning the third largest county in the United States for the sale of vegetables, melons, potatoes and sweet potatoes.

Additionally, studies have shown that for every $1,000 vegetable sale, less than acre feet of water is used to cover one acre of land to a depth of one foot.

The report places Yuma as one of the nation’s leading agricultural producers, with plant agriculture at a concentration of 58 times the national average, surpassing specialized industries such as vehicle manufacturing in Detroit.

Researchers found that of the $3.9 billion economic activity that occurred in Yuma County, agricultural businesses directly donated $2.8 billion. This includes $1.3 billion from crop production, $167 million from livestock industry, $1.3 billion from agricultural support services and suppliers, and $4 million from university-affiliated agricultural research and cooperative expansion activities. .
