WaPo Editor Steps Down After Jeff Bezos Announces Paper Will Write In Defense Of ‘Personal Liberties And Free Markets’

Washington Post opinion editor David Shipley resigned from his position on Wednesday, with the paper’s owner Jeff Bezos unveiling a major change in the OP-ED section.

Bezos announcement Because both of these pillars were key parts of America’s success, the opinion section of the paper focuses on personal freedom and the advocacy of free markets. The Post’s owner said the opinion section does not include any criticism of these pillars.

“We write every day to support and defend two pillars: individual freedom and the free market. We will of course also cover other topics, but the perspectives against these pillars are published by others. It will be done,” Bezos said. “There was a time when newspapers, especially local monopoly, could have seen them as a service that brought a wider opinion section to the reader’s gateway every morning, trying to cover all opinions. Today, the Internet is the job. I’m doing it.”

“I am America, I am proud to be that for America, and I am proud to be. Our country has not come here by being typical, and a large part of America’s success. was freedom in the economic realm and everywhere else. Freedom is ethical, minimizes coercion, is practical, and promotes creativity, invention and prosperity,” continued Bezos. Ta. (Related: Big Technology bends knees and Donald Trump)

Bezos said he gave Shipley the opportunity to continue his role, but suggested he was not keen on changing the opinion section.

“I offered David Shipley, who greatly admired the opportunity to lead this new chapter. I suggested to him that if the answer was not “yes”, then it had to be “no.” I did. After careful consideration, David decided to leave,” Bezos continued. “This is a big change, not easy and requires 100% commitment. I respect his decision. I will look for a new opinion editor to own this new direction.”

The Post owner and former Amazon CEO said that the perspective on personal freedom and the free market is “underserved” in the current media situation.

Bezos appears to have changed President Donald Trump’s songs since President Donald Trump took office, and even offered a celebration message After winning the 2024 election in November, he was president about his “extraordinary political comeback.” The owner of the Post, who once called Trump’s attacks on the media “dangerous,” had dinner with Trump and Dozi Chairman Elon Musk at Mar Arago in December, showing a change in relations.

Prior to his visit to Mar-A-Lago, Bezos has donated $1 million to Trump’s first fund through Amazon.

In late October, Bezos said his decision to the post not to support former vice president Kamala Harris ahead of the 2024 election corresponded to a lack of media credibility.
